Bakhtiari Bags
The Bakhtiari tribe live in areas in southwestern Iran, east of Luristan (home
of the Luri) and north of the Fars Province (home of the Qashqa'i). Most
Bakhtiari live in the Chahar Mahal district and have traditionally migrated
each summer into the Zagros mountains. The 1976 film "People of the Wind"(link)
chronicles a Bakhtiari migration. The nomadic Bakhtiari tribe of western Iran
make their annual ~200 mile trek from the high summer pastures to low winter
pastures, passing through the Zagros Mountains and a 12,000 ft. pass. The
Bakhtiari confederation of tribes is large and powerful, covering much of
central and southwestern Iran. Small rugs and trappings are woven by the
migratory tribes, while large carpets of great magnificence are woven in the
settled villages. Their name translates roughly as "the lucky ones".
