Pillows, Cushions, Bags &
Bolsters
The unique collection of colorful pillows are often handmade from the antique
textiles of Central Asia with geometric designs and intricate Soumak weavings.
Cushions have typically been made from the face of a bag. Decorative woven
saddlebags, storage sacks and bolsters have traditionally enhanced daily
aspects of nomadic life. Saddlebags, woven in mixed techniques, are mostly
Balouch, Bakhtiari and Turkoman.
The Shahsavan and Qashqa'i mafrash are woven as bedding bags. A variety of salt
bags are from Afghanistan and Iran, where salt is very precious. In these
areas, the importance of salt is historically a highly valued currency and is
traded for use as a seasoning and as an ingredient for baking bread. It is also
given to camels to get them to take on more water before they cross arid land.
