Rubbings
From Myanmar
by Tin Win
Tin Win, an artist from Myanmar, creates original rubbings from the Ava period
in the 17th Century. These rubbings are created from woodcarvings known as
Jataka plaques. They are made of bamboo or rice paper, embossed, then painted
with gold. The Jataka is the story of the Buddha's life. All branches of
Buddhism celebrate these tales that tell of Buddha's wondrous animal fables and
re-knowned miracles. There are over 500 Jataka stories. They can be very short
or as long as novellas. Most are known world-wide within the Buddhist
community. They are a favorite within the Myanmar painting tradition.
